Updated: Oct 18

In honor of "Late" Karen Mashi, a remarkable member of the Rotary Club of Concord-Diablo who dedicated her time and talent to the Markham Arboretum Society, a joint project was set in motion to celebrate Community Service Month. This initiative, which was spearheaded by Beri Kasper, brought together various community organizations, high school students, and local authorities to pay homage to Karen's legacy of service and commitment to her community.

The Rotary Club of Clayton Valley Concord Sunrise, the Rotary Club of Pleasant Hill, and the Kiwanis Club of Concord joined hands with 46 Key Club students and other high schoolers from Clayton Valley, Concord, Pittsburg, Las Lomas, and Northgate. This collaboration not only honored Karen's memory but also exemplified the spirit of unity and service that she embodied.

Amidst the verdant surroundings of the Markham Arboretum, volunteers rolled up their sleeves to engage in activities that ranged from revitalizing garden spaces to organizing community outreach programs. The City of Concord Parks department played a pivotal role in facilitating the event, showcasing the power of partnership between local government and community organizations.

The presence of Council member Laura Hoffmeister added a touch of official appreciation to the event, recognizing the significance of such collaborative efforts in fostering a sense of belonging and pride within the community. The energy and enthusiasm of the students from diverse high schools underscored the intergenerational impact of community service, inspiring a ripple effect of positive change and goodwill.

As the day unfolded, smiles, sweat, and laughter filled the air, creating a tapestry of shared experiences and collective achievements. The dedication and passion of each volunteer echoed Karen Mashi's unwavering commitment to making a difference in the lives of others, reminding everyone present of the transformative power of service and unity.

Through shared endeavor and mutual respect, barriers were broken, friendships were forged, and a sense of camaraderie enveloped all participants, regardless of age, background, or affiliation. The legacy of Karen Mashi served as a beacon, guiding everyone to work together towards a common goal of enriching their community and uplifting those in need.

In a world often overshadowed by individual pursuits, the collaborative spirit displayed during this Community Service Month celebration illuminated the path towards a more compassionate and connected society. It highlighted the beauty of joining hands, sharing burdens, and creating lasting memories that transcend the boundaries of time and space.

The echoes of laughter and the fragrance of blooming flowers at the Markham Arboretum stood as testaments to the enduring impact of selfless service and collective action. As the sun set on the day's activities, a sense of fulfillment and unity settled over the participants, carrying forward the spirit of camaraderie and dedication instilled by the day's events.

In commemorating Karen Mashi's legacy and celebrating Community Service Month, this collaborative endeavor not only honored the past but also paved the way for a future imbued with compassion, empathy, and a shared sense of purpose. It is through such concerted efforts that communities thrive, hearts unite, and the unseen potential of collective action is unveiled.
